What Is an Enclosed Trailer?

An enclosed trailer is a covered transport solution with a fixed roof, full-height body and access doors. Compared with an open trailer, it helps reduce exposure to rain, dust, road spray and unnecessary public visibility while travelling or parked.

Enclosed trailers are suitable for:

  • Tools and trade equipment
  • Commercial stock and supplies
  • Motorcycles and recreational vehicles
  • Vehicles (suitability depends on internal dimensions, door opening, and verified vehicle specifications)
  • Event and display equipment
  • Mobile service operations
  • Machinery and specialised cargo
  • General business and personal transport
  •

Available Configurations and Specifications

Halco offers standard and custom enclosed-trailer configurations based on the intended load, required internal space and towing setup. Dimensions, access, axle arrangement, flooring, braking, lighting, storage and finish are confirmed in the written specification for each build.

Typical configurations can include:

  • Multiple sizes — From compact to larger builds based on requirements
  • Access options — Rear doors, side doors, or combination access
  • Axle arrangements — Single or tandem configurations
  • Flooring options — Checker plate, steel decking or timber
  • Lighting — ADR-compliant lighting where applicable
  • Suspension — Spring or rocker-roller options
  • Braking — Mechanical or electric brake axles
  • Finish options — Powder-coated or galvanised
  • Custom colours — Available on request
  • Internal features — Shelving, toolboxes, tie-down points (as specified)

Suitability for a specific load, vehicle or application depends on the verified dimensions, weight, door opening, internal clearance, towing vehicle capacity and approved ATM.

How to Specify an Enclosed Trailer

When planning an enclosed trailer, confirm:

  1. What You’re Transporting Provide accurate dimensions (length, width, height) and weight of the equipment or vehicle. For vehicles, include ground clearance and axle track width.
  2. Required Access How will you load and unload? Rear door access is practical for vehicles. Side doors suit frequent tool access. Combination access suits variable workflows.
  3. Your Towing Vehicle Provide the towing vehicle’s rated towing capacity and coupling type. The trailer must not exceed these limits.
  4. Internal Features List any required shelving, workbenches, toolboxes, lighting or tie-down requirements.
  5. Protection and Finish Confirm whether standard powder-coat or galvanised finish is preferred for the expected operating environment.

Halco will confirm the appropriate dimensions, capacity, axle configuration and approved specification in the written quote.

Materials, Flooring and Finish Options

Materials and components are selected according to the intended load, operating environment, expected service life and maintenance requirements.

Flooring options may include checker plate, steel decking or timber, depending on the cargo type and durability requirements.

Finish options may include powder-coated (standard) or galvanised finishes. Galvanised finish provides additional corrosion resistance for trailers regularly exposed to salt spray or wet conditions.

Components – suspension, braking, lighting, coupling, wheels, tyres and other elements, are selected to suit the completed trailer’s design and intended use.

The specific materials, components and finish included in an individual Halco build are confirmed in the written specification before manufacture begins.

Enclosed Trailers vs Other Trailer Types

Enclosed vs Open Trailers

An open trailer (flat top or tray) offers maximum loading flexibility but provides no weather protection. An enclosed trailer provides weather resistance and visibility control but restricts loading angles and door clearance.

Enclosed vs Box Trailers

An enclosed trailer has a fixed roof and full-height body. A box trailer generally has different side heights and loading characteristics. The right option depends on the required weather protection, cargo dimensions, access and payload.

Enclosed Trailer vs Flat-Top Trailer

A flat-top trailer provides an open deck with side and overhead loading access. An enclosed trailer provides a covered cargo area accessed through doors or ramps.

Choose an enclosed trailer when: the load benefits from covered transport, organised storage or controlled access.

Choose a flat-top trailer when: you need to load pallets, machinery, building materials or oversized cargo from the side or above.

Enclosed Trailer vs Tradesman Trailer

A tradesman trailer is designed primarily around organised tool storage and frequent worksite access. An enclosed trailer usually provides a larger, more flexible interior for mixed cargo, equipment or mobile-workspace layouts.

Choose an enclosed trailer when: you need adaptable internal space for changing loads, equipment or commercial stock.

Choose a tradesman trailer when: structured tool storage and fast daily access are the main priorities.

Compliance, Registration and Road-Ready Builds

Trailers with an Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) of 4.5 tonnes or less are expected to comply with the Australian Design Rules (ADRs) applicable to their category under the Road Vehicle Standards framework.

The exact requirements vary according to the trailer’s approved mass, dimensions, components and approval pathway. Compliance should be considered during the design and manufacturing process rather than added after fabrication.

For Victorian customers, trailer registration requirements depend on the trailer’s ATM, tare mass, dimensions, use and whether an exemption applies. VicRoads provides a limited registration exemption for trailers that meet all specified conditions.

For current registration requirements and exemption conditions, refer to the official VicRoads trailer and caravan registration guidance.

For Australian light trailer requirements, the Australian Government’s Vehicle Standards Bulletin 1 — Revision 6 provides guidance for trailers with an ATM of 4.5 tonnes or less.

FAQs

Enclosed-trailer pricing depends on the dimensions, approved capacity, axle configuration, access, internal fit-out and finish. Provide Halco with the intended load, maximum weight, internal dimensions and towing vehicle to receive a written quotation.

Size depends on the verified dimensions, weight and loading requirements of your cargo. Provide the actual specifications of the equipment or vehicle you plan to transport, and Halco will recommend a suitable configuration.

Yes. Halco can discuss custom internal dimensions where standard configurations do not suit the intended cargo or working requirements. Provide the required length, width and height, together with the load weight, towing vehicle and access requirements.

A rear ramp generally suits wheeled equipment, motorcycles and vehicles, while barn doors can suit manually loaded cargo, tools and commercial goods.

The best choice depends on the load, available loading space, required ramp angle and how frequently the trailer must be accessed.

The correct axle configuration depends on the completed trailer design, approved mass, load distribution and intended use.

A single-axle configuration may suit a smaller, lighter build. Tandem axles may be considered for larger bodies or different load requirements. Axle count alone does not determine capacity; the chassis, suspension, tyres, brakes, coupling and other components must also be appropriately specified.

Payload is calculated by subtracting the completed trailer’s tare mass from its Aggregate Trailer Mass. Payload = ATM − tare mass

Permanent features such as ramps, shelving, workbenches, toolboxes and lighting increase tare mass and can reduce the weight available for cargo.

Internal storage and fit-out requirements can be discussed during quotation.

Depending on the approved design, these may include shelving, toolboxes, tie-down points, lighting, equipment mounts or work surfaces. List all permanent features before the trailer capacity is finalised because they contribute to tare mass.

Registration depends on the trailer’s mass, dimensions and intended use. Some very light trailers may qualify for a Victorian exemption only when every VicRoads condition is met. Confirm the current requirements for the individual trailer before use.
